The REI Trail 40 is my go-to backpack for day hikes and weekend overnights. Finding the right daypack was tough, there were a lot options to sort out, but in the end, all of the REI Trail 40’s positives outweigh the minor downsides. The REI Trail 40 is as light as packs half its size, has plenty of room to store gear, and is well thought out with tons of practical features for anyone hitting the trail. Oh, and it works great as a carry-on bag for travel too. Here’s why I’m loving the Trail 40 aftermonths of testing.

how much does it weigh when you have all your stuff and go walking it gets lighter as you hike through the day cause you drink water and eat I have a great time walking nice
I like this pack as well. My only con is no cinch straps if you don’t have the pack full and you don’t want your stuff floating around.
where you at what forest or out in the open?

Thanks for the review. Well done. Too bad REI decided to jump into the political fights. I won’t be using REI brands or shopping at their stores. Their competition has gotten hundreds of dollars from me in the last couple of months alone.
I have the same backpack. I love it . It carries extremely well
What sleeping bag did you pack? And what compression sack did you use with that? Thanks!
is there a rei trail 30?
Hey, great review! By any chance can you say whether you think a larger size smartphone would fit in the hip pockets? Would you be able to take out and put back a water bottle in one of the side pockets without taking the pack off first?
Great, comfortable backpack. Probably the best backpack REI has done for some time. Used it on my 500+ mile Camino walk in Spain. No problems. easy access to interior and water bottles. Light but durable. Love it.
