Review: Cascade Mountain Tech Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles (BUDGET GEAR)

Backpacking can wear on your joints. Hiking for miles over rough terrain, up and down, all while carrying extra weight on your back is a lot to put your lower body through. Trekking poles can help alleviate that stress. They allow you to transfer some of the burden to your upper body as you traverse uphill and downhill sections of trail. Along with helping you hike, trekking poles can also be useful in erecting a shelter. Some lightweight shelters even require trekking poles for set up.

Like all backpacking gear, trekking poles can get expensive, especially when it comes to ultralight poles. So when we came across this pair priced at $45, made of 100% carbon fiber, we had to try them for ourselves.

We bought the Cascade Mountain Tech Carbon Fiber Quick Lock Trekking Poles and put them through well over 100 miles of trail including varied terrain. In this video, we give you a quick but comprehensive gear review. Can you really get a quality pair of carbon fiber trekking poles for just $45? Is this budget gear for real?

Kyle says:

I have had mine for well over 2 years in all weather including snow and ice and they have been used heavily with not 1 problem.I see them every year at Cost-Co sell out but I never see other hikers using them?

Ken Bayard says:

I like the cork grips. Looks like a viable option for those on a budget.

I have used these hiking poles for over three years now with easily over a 1,000 miles of hiking in the West.  I hike on a lot of rough surfaces up and down mountain trails.  I even used them for a rim-to-rim-to-rim hike of the Grand Canyon last October.  They have been great.  I have had no problems whatsoever and expect them to last for many hikes to come.

Awesome review gents! I’m sold. I honestly will probably only use them for shelter setups as I’m not yet into hiking or backpacking and more of a camper/bushcrafter but after I’m done with this accounting degree and finally get some dirt time in and scratch this epic itch for the outdoors that I haven’t been to scratch yet because of school, maybe I’ll try some backpacking. I have some ultra light gear that will go really well for the sport so who knows, maybe I’ll be adding a new element to this outdoor passion of mine. Thanks again for the review!!

Susan Jordan says:

I have these poles and have used them in the mountains of GA and they did the job. I lost one of the thumbscrews one time because it came all the way unscrewed and fell out into my trunk. Luckily after I unpacked my trunk I found it. I will be more careful in the future, but I wish there was a feature that you can’t lose the thumbscrew. Without those the pole is worthless.

Bill Wolfram says:

Agree ! I own my for a year now no problems !! Thanks !

Earl Rohrer says:

I like the price, did you say how much it weigh ?

Jeremy Dance says:

For ultra runners you can’t beat Black Diamond Distance z poles https://amzn.to/2u9OaIL After 40 miles you will thank the stars they are only half a pound each (1.2 for both)
